Valley of Fire travel tips, everything you need and want to know!

Mouse Tank Road during sunrise

It is has been awhile since I wrote a blog post :)  I am so excited to share more about our recent road trip through Nevada and California!

It was the first time for me to visit these two states and I can say I loved our time here!

After an evening flight we arrived at the city of Sin, aka Las Vegas. Arriving at Las Vegas airport means seeing slot machines and 24 hours flower machines at the airport, you can’t miss it.

We didn’t spend much time in Las Vegas, we right away took the shuttle from the airport to pick up our rental car. We made a stop at Subway, and from there we drove to our hotel near the Valley of Fire. By the time we arrived it was past midnight.

The next morning, we ate some breakfast with coffee and then it was time to go to the Valley of Fire! I wanted to see the Valley of Fire ever since I saw a picture of this incredible place a couple of years ago.

Valley of Fire travel tips

Practical information and history

The Valley of Fire State Park is in Nevada, 50 minutes from Las Vegas. It is open from sunrise to sunset every day, 365 day a year.

Valley of Fire State Park is over 40.000 acres wide and consists red Aztec sandstone that was formed during the Jurassic period, more than 150 million years ago. Valley of Fire got its name because the red Aztec rock often appear to be on fire with the light of the sun.

Fun facts: Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger and scenes of Star Trek Generations were filmed in the Valley of Fire.

What are the highlights?

-Driving around at Valley of Fire: as soon as you enter this state park you are surrounded by an incredible landscape with different shapes and forms.

-Mouse Tank Road:

Scenic road with beautiful landscape. Great spot to watch the sunrise!

-Fire Wave trail: a nice short hike from the parking lot leads to the Fire Wave. Be aware even though it is an easy trail there is a part with loose rocks.

-Pink Canyon: The Fire Wave trail leads to the Pink Canyon. Pink. Canyon is worth seeing, I loved the pink tones and shapes of the canyon. It seems like less people were visiting this spot even though it is 5 minutes apart from the Fire Wave.

-Spotting wildlife: Valley of Fire is home to many different animals including Bighorn sheep. You can see them throughout the park. Valley of Fire has one of healthiest populations in the Southwest.

What is the best time to visit?

Go early morning or late afternoon, best time to avoid the crowds and it is not too warm.

We went twice for sunrise, which meant we were near the entrance around 6.20 in early October.

My favourite spot

Watching sunrise at Mouse Tank Road. When the sun hit the rocks, it is magical, it is like they light up and it is an incredible spot for photos.
